Making Thanksgiving Meaningful

My ever thoughtful husband decided last night that we have a simple Thanksgiving dinner. Omar took Timmy and I to our favorite restaurant and while eating we shared the things we’re grateful for. 🙂 We really don’t celebrate this holiday in the Philippines but it’s a big thing in the United States as it is tied to their history.

For our family, we used this time to intentionally count our blessings. 🙂 Although we pray daily and thank God for the things that happened that day, we are not that conscious in “regularly” remembering God’s goodness and faithfulness in our lives.

And so during our Thanksgiving dinner we had the opportunity to do just that. While waiting for our food, Timmy and I wrote the things we’re thankful for in small sheets of paper and I told him that we’ll put them inside a Thanksgiving jar (which I have yet to buy). We’re not yet done, though. We’ll continue it today as a family and over the long weekend. 🙂 Some of the things Timmy was thankful for, aside from family, were numbers and Christmas trees. Haha! Too cute! 🙂

Meanwhile, Omar and I shared how grateful we were to be married to each other. (Awwww…so cheesy! Haha!) 🙂 He recalled the very things he prayed for in a wife and how God answered them. I told him how grateful I was that the Lord exceeded my expectations for an ideal husband when I married him. 🙂 We both told Timmy how thankful we were that God blessed us with a sweet, funny, and obedient son. His reaction was priceless. Haha! He gave us a funny face with an I-can’t-take-this-cheesiness sigh. 🙂 Haha!

I also told Omar that I’m so thankful that our family is “chill.” Haha! I know it’s a weird description for a family but what I meant was I’m grateful that we live a simple, drama-free life. Of course we have our own set of problems and worries. We even have health issues to deal with (lupus and ischemia for me, asthma for Timmy, kidney stones for Omar) but in spite of it all, God has allowed us to live with inexplicable peace in our hearts. We laugh a lot every day and make fun of each other without getting pissed (sore losers are not allowed in the Guerrero household. Haha!). 🙂

I’m grateful that we’re not rushing through life but cruising through it despite the storms that come our way. We have unhurried meals, long playtime with our little boy, and extended sleep because we both work from home and we’re homeschooling. 🙂 Of course we still go out for playdates and catch up with friends. We’re not cut off from the world. Haha! I’m just saying that our home and family life have been our sanctuary, a place where we can really chill and go crazy—something that no other place can give us. 🙂 And for that I’m truly grateful.

We ended our dinner with both our hearts and tummies full. 🙂 Timmy spent some playtime with his dad after while I went to the grocery. For some, this might look like an uneventful day. For me, that was quality time. A privilege we get to experience daily. Although I came home with a stabbing back ache and extreme hyperacidity, God made sure that I would end my day on a thankful note. My loving husband gave me a back massage and my sweet little boy gave me my medicine for Dyspepsia (Awwww! <3). My heart brimmed with gratefulness. I can never thank God enough. 🙂

How did you spend your Thanksgiving? I hope it was just as fun and meaningful! 🙂
