Learning Math With Albert: A Vibrant Math Curriculum for Preschoolers

One of the perks of homeschooling is getting to choose your own curriculum. While we have the option to use the textbooks from our homeschool provider, we also have the choice to pick our own. So far, we’ve already tried two math curricula—Math U See and Saxon Math. 🙂

Math U See didn’t fit Timmy’s learning style so we shifted to Saxon Math, which worked for us. But its repetitive nature needs sprucing up. It’s mostly black and white so it lacks appeal especially on lazy days. Haha! Just recently, my homeschool mentor Donna introduced me to Learning Math with Albert!

What got us really excited about this curriculum were two things—full color books and supplementary materials. Timmy was so eager to use the numbers when he saw them all laid out! I was just as thrilled! 🙂

Basically, the entire curriculum covers everything from the basics of size recognition to multiplication. The division level will come in next year and will most likely be included in the package. Learning Math with Albert is based on Singapore Math, too! 🙂 Below you will see the colorful and engaging supplementary materials complete with CDs, magnetic numbers, magnetic board, flash cards, reward stars, and multiplication tile set. 🙂

Here’s Timmy eager to use the number magnets and the magnetic board! 🙂 We actually used the addition and subtraction flash cards first because he was so eager to open them already! Removing the numbers from the board is actually a good fine motor practice. The pieces are thin so it provides challenge for small hands. 🙂

The entire curriculum consists of 10 hardcover, full color books with 10 corresponding thin activity books. You can choose to photocopy the activity books so you can reuse it or you can place stickers like what I did in the video. My son loves it because it reads like story books with big colorful illustrations. 🙂

Admittedly, my son is pretty advanced in math. I was thinking of skipping levels 1 and 2. Good thing I didn’t because as much as it is simple, it takes keen observation skills. Level 1, which we just finished, tackled sizes, length, height, thickness, and depth. Timmy didn’t breeze through it. He was still challenged in some areas particularly in arranging the objects according to size, depth, etc. He had to look closely at the pictures to see the differences. So yes, it’s still beneficial to go through the basics. 🙂

Here’s Timmy going through the Level 1 book:

Here are some photos of him fully engaged in his lessons. 🙂 I didn’t want him to write on the book that’s why he’s just pointing. Haha! I also cut out greater than and less than symbols for the exercises. 🙂

This curriculum is not heavy on worksheets. But it comes with five CDs that has A LOT of practice exercises. Your child should be able to use the mouse or your laptop’s touch pad for the exercises. If you have a touchscreen monitor then this will be very easy to use because it’s just like playing on a tablet device. Otherwise, all the exercises should be guided. 🙂

So far, we’re loving this new curriculum! Will blog about Level 2 next week. Watch out for it! Here’s a quick recap of some practical tips I shared earlier:

  • Supplement it with more written exercises if your child is having a hard time doing the CD exercises.
  • Photocopy the activity book for repeated use.
