How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World by Marjorie Priceman (Five in a Row)

The early years are the most memorable homeschooling years and I am really enjoying this stage a lot! I don’t even want to know when the early years actually ends. Hahaha! Today, I’m doing a bit of a throwback post. 🙂 We rowed How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World by Marjorie Priceman last year. I know, talk about super delayed posting. Haha! What can I say? Life happened! 🙂 We moved to a new place, had a string of reunions, and what-have-yous. I’ve been posting more on my Facebook page, though, and here’s to hoping that I’ll be able to blog regularly again! 🙂

Going back, I love documenting our homeschool journey because we not only learn a lot of things but we also get to build a lot of memories together. 🙂 This book is one of our most loved ones. It’s rich in ideas and experiences that you can take with you especially if you plan to travel!

Basic Geography

This book is about a girl who had to travel the world just to get all the ingredients she needs to make an apple pie. We tried to recreate the experience by making a passport for Timmy and letting him stamp the countries he’d been to and log the products he got. 🙂 We even placed his photo to make it look more realistic! We also printed tickets for each country he would go to. It’s a great way to explore the world map, too!

Health

Part of our sensory activity was trying different types of apples! 🙂 This is one of Timmy’s favorite fruits. He loves the crunchy ones. He found the green apple a bit sour, which is usually the case. He happily munched on the rest. Heehee! And since I don’t know how to bake an apple pie. I just ordered a slice for him from Banapple. Fellow moms, this is what you call smart outsourcing. Haha! 🙂 The apple pie was delish, by the way.

Practical Skills

We also recreated the cow milking process! I taped our tissue rolls together to form makeshift cow legs. Haha! I also drew some black spots on the tissue to make it look a bit more like a cow. Heehee! Timmy then mixed water with flour to form a creamy milk texture.

We then placed the milk inside a hand glove. I poked the tips of the fingers with a pin so that the milk would come out of the glove when he squeezed it. Timmy enjoyed this activity a lot! Hopefully, he’ll be able to this with a real cow sometime in the future. 🙂

Here’s a video of him in action. Haha!

For more ideas, check out our other Five in a Row posts and letter of the week activities! My little guy is six years old and he’s already in first grade. Time flies lightning fast! Our homeschooling journey has evolved drastically in a span of one year (more on that in my next blog). But that’s the beauty of homeschooling, you can embrace change completely and be delighted with pockets of surprises in the process. So there, thanks for reading and see you in my next blog! Keep making memories! ?
